Faith over Fear…

I did not start drinking till my freshman year of college at Abilene Christian University. I was on the football and track team, but I lost interest in my goals on the field, as well as in the classroom and decided college was not for me. I quit college, came home, and married my high school sweetheart. I wanted to drink whenever I had the opportunity, and it immediately caused problems in my marriage. At this time in my life, I was able to keep a good job but every chance I got, I drank.

I have three children: 26, 22, and 16. Two boys and a girl. I went to my first rehab for alcohol in my twenties and for a second time in my thirties, once more in my forties. Every time it was for my family or for work and never because I thought I was really an alcoholic. I never fully worked the 12 steps and only once got a sponsor. After twenty-seven years of marriage, my wife divorced me. I used that as an excuse to keep drinking. My health declined, and I only lived to get drunk.

I came to Soul’s Harbor on March 4th, 2022. I was so broken and miserable when I arrived. My first month was like I was in a foggy haze. I was willing to do anything to change my life. I got a sponsor and worked the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, all the way through for the first time in my life. I graduated the six-month program at Soul’s Harbor. I started in the warehouse, like everyone does, became a helper at a store and eventually the store manager. A staff position was offered to me for intake and I accepted. After graduation, I decided to stay longer and became the medication coordinator and it was the correct decision. My time at the Harbor has been nothing short of a miracle. I have experienced more peace, confidence and joy during the 13 months here than the previous thirty years of my adult life. I will continue to work on my recovery and spiritual condition for as long as I live.

I will always keep a special love in my heart for the people and principles of Soul’s Harbor.
