Meet Our Newest Employee at
Soul’s Harbor...
Meet Derrick Wallace. Derrick has been with Soul’s Harbor for three and a half years, and over two of those years as a staff member. Derrick is the heart of our recovery program, and he puts the SOUL in Soul’s Harbor. Derrick is 3 1/2 years sober and clean. His commitment to our community is now literally paying off as he has become the newest employee as Recovery Manager. Derrick has the calm demeanor of a monk as he sits, hands folded in prayer, and we hold a little Q & A about his role at Soul’s Harbor:
What brought you to Soul’s Harbor?Truth is, I had a huge drug addiction, it followed me for 30 years. I tried other recovery programs, but they weren’t spiritual. This was the last one left. I had nowhere else to go. So, Soul’s Harbor it was. And it was a blessing.
What separates Soul’s Harbor from other rehabs?God. God is here.
What’s the most fulfilling part of your job?Being part of a network of people. No matter what your race or sexual identification is, I have an answer as to where to place you in recovery. I get to see lives change for the better here. And I get to be a part of it.
What do you think makes recovery at Soul’s Harbor so successful? We have a large network of sponsors that have already been through the program, or we have met at outside meetings. And South Dallas Drug Court. We are closely partnered with them, and they help men and women with their legal problems. For example, any City of Dallas citations are removed from their files upon completion of our program.
What makes the community at Soul’s Harbor so strong?Caring for one another with support. Everyone familiarizes themselves with the new people. For example, showing the new guys the ropes when they first get here and making them feel comfortable from the jump.
What are some improvements you are looking to make as Recovery Manager? To graduate from the program, one must complete the 5th step. I would like to see the guys get beyond that in their stay here, because they won’t get the full concept of the 12 steps if they just stop at 5. It’s like baking a cake. If you leave any of the steps out, the cake will not rise.
What’s the greatest success story you’ve seen in your time here?Chas, William Chas J. Chas and I got here around the same time. He told me his life story. And after that, I saw how hard he worked at his recovery and his job. I hadn’t seen anyone work like that. I found this man had nothing, but the clothes on his back and his dog. After he graduated, and moved into sober living, he always sought help from others and his higher power. Besides the material things he acquired: house, truck, clothes, etc. — which are all nice. None of those things have changed how hard he works on his recovery. Or how much time he is willing to spend helping his fellow man.
