May 2024 Newsletter
Hello, my name is Kevin Jackson, a graduate of the Souls Harbor Men’s Program. This is my second time here. The first time was in 2014, 10 years ago. After being Clean for nearly 8 years, I relapsed and had to come back to Soul’s Harbor. Since I arrived on November 16, 2022, my process hasn’t been an easy one, especially with all my many challenges. Living with diabetes, the disease of addiction and mental health issues, I really struggled coming back into the Program. I was unstable in every aspect of my life, and it was quite a task in regaining stability, but none of it would have been possible, had it not been for Souls Harbor. Being here has given me the opportunity to really get Clean and Sober all the way across the board, getting off the drugs and alcohol and dealing with the underlying behavioral problems that came with using. Once I started to plug into the Recovery Aspect of the Program, my life started to get better day by day; I prayed for the ability to be strong like I have never been before! This was essential for me to deal with all the tragedies that soon were going to happen in my life. In a short period of time, I had eleven deaths in my family including my dad. And on the same day my father passed away, I almost died myself, due to diabetes. The Doctors in the emergency room told me, that if I hadn’t have made it to the hospital when I did, then it would’ve been only a matter of time that I would’ve ended up just like my dad…Deceased! This, within itself, really opened my eyes as to how I now saw “Life”…New Perspective! Through it all, I’ve learned to fight and take a stand for what’s right and be an example in this community as to what Recovery looks like in action, and to “Stay Clean, No Matter What!” My deal today is this: “If I’m not here for business, I have no business being here!” Today, I’m a very grateful Recovering Addict that’s living life as it’s meant to be lived, and not existing from day to day. Today, I’m not looking for a Blessing, I’m just trying to be one!
I began to Surrender in a whole different way, praying for not only “Healing” but Deliverance as well; something that I never really prayed for. As I began to get stronger, I continued to surround myself in the company of my brothers here, who really became an asset in my Recovery. I opened up to them, just like I opened up to GOD! Using the tools of Recovery has really helped ease the tension in my mind and has given me the ability to keep trudging “One Day At A Time.”
My mental health issues have been dealt with by Staying Clean/Sober, Fellowshipping, Taking my Medication, Counseling and the Power of Prayer; I’m a true believer in the power thereof!
After the deaths of my many family members started to subside, I finally started to arrive at a place in my Recovery where I could breathe again. Being here at Souls Harbor has been a plus for me during these difficult times. I would hate to even think of what my life would have look like, had it not been for Soul’s Harbor.
Above all else, as Recovering Addicts/Alcoholics, we must be rid of any/all excuses to use; things will only be worse if we do! I’ve been Blessed to be here 18 months, and my Life is so much better than before; I owe it all to GOD and the Staff here at Souls Harbor for allowing me to come back!
There’s a “Me” inside of “Me” that was just dying to meet “Me” but I would’ve never been able to meet him if I didn’t Stay Clean and Sober…this place has given me that opportunity to do so, and also be reconciled to both my friends and family.
Thank you for a Successful Gala!!!
Last month, we had our inaugural fundraising gala. It was an overwhelming success raising over $50,000 for our Capital Campaign. I want to thank our two sponsors, Kelli Poremba from Edward Jones, and the Loretto Foundation along with all the individuals that purchased tables and seats. Also, I want to thank Eddie Deen who provided a beautiful venue and meal. The 11-piece band was incredible. If you missed out on this fun event, you should come next year.
