January 2024 Newsletter
On Sunday, January 14th, our power went off. The temperature was 14 degrees, but the wind chill was 3 degrees. It was unbearable outside. We thought it was a rolling blackout but soon found out that it was a blown transformer. Almost immediately, the Generac generator kicked in. Even though Soul’s Harbor was without power for almost 7 hours, we were hardly affected. I want to thank all the donors who financially helped us purchase this generator after the February 2021 rolling black out fiasco. During those miserable days in February 2021, we had 60+ hours of no power – without a generator. Finally, I want to Thank our largest generator donor, Dr. Travis Stembridge from Wichita. He lived at Soul’s Harbor in the 1950s with his grandfather, Jake Stembridge, who founded Soul’s Harbor along with Ralph Whittle.
Thank you, again for keeping us warm.
A Night at the Movies…
Our men were treated to a movie and concessions at the AMC Mesquite 30 during theChristmas season. The guys watched “The Iron Claw”. What was cool about this movie is that it dealt with the Von Erich wrestling brothers, who were from the Dallas area. Many of the men at Soul’s Harbor had seen the Von Erich’s in person at the Dallas Sportatorium arena. One resident showed me a picture of him when he was 6 years old with one of the Von Erich brothers. It brought a lot of good memories back for all the guys. The men loved the movie and were also treated to popcorn and soda. Thank you to the anonymous donor who was so generous to provide this unique Christmas Gift to all our men. He has been doing this for 15 straight years.
