June 2022 Newsletter
Twice a year, Eddie Deen comes out to Soul’s Harbor to teach his month-long cognitive class, “Owner of the Brain.” Eddie uses many props during his presentation. One of those props is a fully inflated basketball that he is holding in the picture above. Eddie takes a very sharp knife and stabs the basketball. Then, he talks about people or organizations that can deflate our spirit (basketball). This could be a parent, teacher, church, job, or many other sources. If it happens at an early age, the person’s self-esteem can dramatically be altered for their entire life. Eddie’s class helps our homeless men to recognize when the basketball (spirit) was deflated and how to heal the wound and place air back into the basketball. One of my other favorite analogies that Eddie uses, is the “trail horse” vs “the cutting horse.” Some of our schools and workplaces do not want innovative thought leadership but want a “trail horse” mentality to follow the same path that everyone follows with the same ugly scenery. Eddie suggests that we must be more like “cutting horses” by showing leadership and creativity. Cutting horses must separate a single cow from a herd of cattle. Eddie uses videos like the one below to show how a cutting horse works:
This intellectual seminar is part of the Soul’s Harbor holistic approach to substance abuse recovery. A side benefit is that Eddie brings his world-famous barbeque and feeds our 60+ guys.
Thank you, Eddie, for coming out to Soul’s Harbor since 2009!!!
